Bellamy, Elise; Lefebvre, Alain; Mahe, Kelig; De Rafelis, Marc.
The bay of Somme is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) with a production amounting to 3000 tons per year on average. In order to improve the stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. First, was carried out a morphometric analysis of the two left and right valves, which has revealed a perfect symmetry of the shell and has allowed us to establish strong correlations among the morphometric parameters. Then, a chemical marking study has been realized with calcein and manganese in order to obtain the exact growth. Calcein marking has showed a fluorescent stria only for an half hour immersion time at 150 mg.L-1. Likewise, the manganese marking has...

ArchiMer
Haure, Joel; Papin, Mathias; Palvadeau, Hubert; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Nourry, Max; Penisson, Christian; Dupuy, Beatrice; Martin, Jean-louis.

Innovations and technical-economic aspects of structural and non-structural applications of composite materials on large passenger vessels and merchant ships. ArchiMer
Maccari, A; Farolfi, F.
Considerable interest is presently being shown in research, design and practical application of composite materials within Fincantieri Merchant Shipbuilding Division. This paper is intended to discuss the state-of-the-art and the innovations in hull, outfitting and accommodation applications, where traditional steel or light alloy can be successfully replaced by composites. The impact on design and production is outlined, with an overview of the economic effects of these materials on technology, production and safety requirements, which remain an open subject for the future possible developments.

Testing the effectiveness of tough resin systems for improving structural performance of joints in GRP ships. ArchiMer
Norwood, L; Caulier, C.
A major concern in any composite structure is its ability to resist peel and shear loading; this becomes a more difficult problem where long delays in laminating have occurred or when dissimilar materials are joined together. In the case of mine countermeasure vessels, adhesion between stiffener and hull becomes critical when the ship is subjected to underwater shock loading. In order to reduce costs and improve the hull-stiffener bond, tough resin systems based on urethane acrylates have been developed to replace the mechanical crack-stopping system currently employed. This paper describes the benefits of urethane acrylates in the frame-hull application discussing the level of improvement over the mechanical system.
